In my opinion I would aim for every 3-4 weeks if you wear your leather strap often.

If you want a specific tool designed for leather. AIS has a chrono leather pen that cleans and actually gives your strap more flexibility.

If you don’t want to purchase the AIS you can still do it yourself with things you have at home. Grab two microfiber towels, some mild soap (preferably unscented). And, a Small bowl with lukewarm water.

Steps

Step 1: Use a dry microfiber towel and remove any excess dirt and debris from your strap.

Step 2: Dampen your new microfiber towel and add a drop or two of mild unscented soap and slowly work the soap in the leather. Then rinse the towel in the bowl of water and squeeze out any excess soap and water from the towel.

Step 3: Now that you have a damped towel, take another pass at your strap and remove any excess soap and or debri using your damped towel. Remember to still be gentle these steps are simple, but take your time and don’t rush it.

Step 4: While the strap is lightly damped apply leather conditioner to rehydrate the leather. Don’t wait until the leather is dry to apply the conditioner. The conditioner helps moisturize and maintain the straps flexibility and avoid a dull look. It will also guarantee your straps a longer life span.

Step 5: Once you’ve applied the conditioner. Let your strap sit for an hour before putting your watch back together. Now you’ve learned the quick and easy steps on how to clean leather straps.
